JOE WENDEROTH
Defending a City Lost in Flames
You and I learn to read innocence
into every part of the room.
The chair, the little shoes on the wall,
the dirty white door.
What we could never bear to know
is offered to us continually:
the whole city lost in flames.
To say anything at all is to imagine
we are making a rush into the thick of it.
Joe Wenderoth grew up near Baltimore. Wesleyan University Press has published his first two books of poems: Disfortune (1995), and It Is If I Speak (2000). Shortline Editions published a chapbook, The Endearment (1999), and Verse Press published Letters to Wendys (2000). He has two books forthcoming from Verse Press: The Holy Spirit of Life: Texts Constructed for John Ashcrofts Secret Self, and Agony: A Proposal (non-fiction). He is Associate Professor English at the University of California, Davis, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
