Earlier this year, I watched a PBS NewsHour segment featuring our author, Reginald Dwayne Betts, as he addressed a room filled with teens in one of the nation’s largest juvenile detention facilities. His book had already been reviewed in the New York Times as “haunting and harrowing,” and I still marveled at how his words could inspire a new generation of thinkers who are seldom afforded a chance to view themselves in a positive, empowered light.
This is the power of literature—to nurture not just the writer and the immediate reader, but the soul of a whole community—and it is why Four Way Books supports our authors not only during the time we publish them but also throughout their writing careers. In return, our authors don’t just win prizes or earn teaching posts, they also spark conversations, open eyes, and challenge each other and ourselves.
Over the past three years, I have had the pleasure of serving as president of the board of directors of Four Way Books. Working closely with other board members and the Four Way Books team—including the press’s director, Martha Rhodes—I’ve gained a first-hand appreciation of the work that everyone in literary publishing performs. I feel honored to be associated with this premier independent press, and I invite you to continue to support Four Way Books or, if you are new to the press, to join its supporters.
I cannot overstate what a vital role your contribution plays for the press and its writers. Even as we discover new ways that poetry and fiction can play a vital role in our lives, we also understand just how challenging it can be for a writer to be heard because she or he is too experimental, or too controversial, or simply not a familiar enough name.
Four Way Books acquires and lovingly produces important, surprising, and potent works for readers who consistently tell us they are glad we are here—eclectically, steadily, and passionately here. Put simply, your support helps make meaningful art available to the world. We’re so glad that you can help us support this worthy enterprise. A gift that is significant to you is significant to Four Way Books.
With warm wishes,
President of the Board
