Starshine & Clay<\/em>, which derives its title from Lucille Clifton\u2019s collection Book of Light<\/em>, weaves together iconic images of the U.S. such as the statue of Jefferson Davis, Confederate flag in hand, that withstood Hurricane Katrina (\u201cJefferson won\u2019t be moved\u2014\/a bold, living relic of stone\u201d) with the lives of those too often left unnoticed: \u201cOh broken bewildered girl I wasn\u2019t born to be, break \/ yesterday under heel\u201d (\u201cEternal Stand,\u201d \u201cThese Are the Breaks\u201d). Yet amid the tragic events on which Moon\u2019s poems look, these lines offer, if not solace, then a reason for hope: \u201conly spirit lasts out here, yet nineteen shacks \/ stubborn against the horizon. Some of us need \/ to build anyway\u2014not just visit but live out closest \/ to the ominous, beautiful truth of it all\u201d (\u201cDay At the Dunes\u201d).<\/p>\n
