I receive a letter from the future.
\nIt assures me everything
\nwill be fine, that you and I
\nwill share a meal with friends,
\nthat one of us will open a book,
\nread a soft passage concerned
\nwith the body and we will all,
\nsomehow, feel a little closer.
\nI crawl back beneath blankets.
\nNothing disappears or goes away.
\nClouds under the light rally.
\nI predict heavy rain in the headlights
\nof parked cars, the day as it is\u2014
\na record stuck in its ending.
\nAlone in the bed\u2019s thick shadow
\nI draft a truce with the world
\nthat will forever remain unread
\nand unsigned. Silence reflecting
\na kind of madness\u2014looking
\nwithin the dim corridors of being.
\nAnd for what, to see the citizens
\nof a small city stalled for a moment
\nat dusk with the pain of certainty
\netched on their faces.<\/p>\n
