In his daring sophomore collection, Nathan McClain interrogates his speaker\u2019s American heritage, history, and responsibility.<\/span>\u00a0Investigating myth, popular culture, governance and more,\u00a0<\/span>Previously Owned<\/span><\/em> connects a villanelle cataloging Sisyphus\u2019s circular workflow to a Die Hard persona poem critiquing police brutality and joins complex pastorals to the stunning sequence entitled \u201cThey said I was an alternate,\u201d which recounts the author\u2019s experience serving on jury duty. Though McClain\u2019s muscular lyric explores a wide range of topics, the intensity of his attention and the profundity of his care remain constant \u2014 the final page describes a young girl in a diner, ringing the bell at the host stand, \u201cjust to hear it sing, the same \/ song, the only song \/\/ it knows.\u201d Insofar as this collection scrutinizes one\u2019s own culpability and responsibility in this country, interested in the natural world and beauty, as well as what beauty distracts us from, it does so in the hopes of reimagining inheritance, of leaving our children a different song.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026The peach was simply a peach,
<\/span>and there for the taking,<\/span><\/p>\n

which is often said of an object that has gone
<\/span>unwatched for too long, susceptible<\/span><\/p>\n

t<\/span>o trespass, which happens
<\/span>first in the mind, and happened first<\/span><\/p>\n

because of fruit,
<\/span>or so says The Good Book<\/span><\/p>\n

if you believe in such things. Knowledge,
<\/span>which a poet once called \u201chistorical,\u201d too<\/span><\/p>\n

a trespassing of sorts, the proof of which
<\/span>perhaps best shown in how one<\/span><\/p>\n

might punish a slave who had been
<\/span>taught to read the word beauty or toil<\/span><\/p>\n

or rest, secretly, and by firelight.
<\/span>There are things nearly impossible<\/span><\/p>\n

to forget, having so trespassed…
