When You\u2019re Deep in a Thing<\/em> reimagines the coming of age book and the masculine tropes of the bildungsroman, suggesting that adulthood never vanquishes the kids we were. When Cappo\u2019s speaker returns home for holidays, \u201cmemories \/ of hangdog childhood seep in \/ like methane.\u201d Despite temporal distance, he perpetually finds himself in the museum of paternal absence, the house his father left, where \u201cghosts whisper\u201d and \u201cframes \/ fade to shame.\u201d From this possessed site, the collection bravely asks, how does one make sense of boyhood? Become a man without guidance? As the certainties of a religious upbringing vanish, the physical and spiritual boundaries of the world threaten to disintegrate. From depression, to political violence, to the certainty of death, Cappo\u2019s exigent debut ventures to discover an intimate humanity against all odds. At these poems\u2019 horizons, a tenacity remains, a determination to find sweetness, candor, and connection in this troubled world, where \u201cthe air\u2019s still, \/\/ The ground a trembling silence,\u201d yet \u201cscathed we set out again.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother couldn\u2019t afford to buy me a leather jacket,
\nbut my sister\u2019s cop boyfriend gave me a John Travolta haircut.
\nHis training: When someone does something <\/em>
\nto this body<\/em>, I pay attention. He took me hunting\u2014<\/p>\n

shooting at deer illegally from a moving car. I cried
\nwhen they broke up. He taught me how to drink,
\nhow to slam the door when you walk in a room
\nto show you\u2019re badass.<\/p>\n

I was a strobe\u2014my dad gone\u2014pulsing
\nin the dark. Teachers said I\u2019d changed. It\u2019s easy
\nto be cruel with a tough guy haircut
\nand gold rope chain. My sister\u2019s disco<\/p>\n

throbbing on the lunchroom jukebox,
\nI\u2019d sit with the greasers, but minutes would pass
\nin silence. Slinked away or just waited for the bell.
\nI always thought it was about the music but<\/p>\n

it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
