Each of them missed his moment, felt it pass\nlike a body moving through an unlit room.\nThe grandfather clock clicks through the minutes, bangs\nthe hours, and they, in their old-fashioned hats\n\n\nand dull black jackets, pace the upstairs halls,\npracticing the words they should have said:\nanother Stop<\/em>, another I'll sober up<\/em>.\nAnd in their murky heads, they run through all\n\nthe cues they missed, the marks they didn't hit.\nSome times\u2014on certain weeknights when it's rained\u2014\nthey gather in attics, unused nurseries,\nand they rehearse like actors.
