The collection\u2019s trajectory builds from sixth-grade science lessons using cows\u2019 eyes (\u201cwe pared them away \/ those shards \/ of stored sight\u201d) to a pondering of the earth\u2019s vast waters lapping up against boundless human thirst: \u201cso huge \/ we are in sorrow, so mired in metaphor and hope, you would know us by it.\u201d The oceanic scale of the poem \u201cWhy the Water\u201d echoes the local mapping of \u201cWetter,\u201d a series of vignettes about the mixed inheritance of bed-wetting and the elusiveness of identity: \u201cIt is yours \/ and not yours. \/ \u2026You race it.\u201d Another poem, \u201cTerra Incognita,\u201d retells a resonant, comic Lakota anecdote concerning the Lewis and Clark expedition. \u201cLove of Line: Notes for an Apprentice Shingler,\u201d turns to the heft and heave of the Old English poetic line in an homage to precision and hard work.
