SMALL PLEASURES, GREAT SWEETNESS<\/p>\n

Just before dawn, the wind begins rioting,
\nand my love and I discuss the towering pine,
\nhow it might crash through the roof, into our bed,<\/p>\n

and suddenly I take pleasure in his nose,
\nwhich is small and aquiline and a fine addition to his face,
\na face I have not tired of looking at in eight years.<\/p>\n

The wind rattles the loose mouldings of the window panes
\nand we muse on the odds of being crushed.
\nI don’t believe the worst will happen,<\/p>\n

but he grew up in Denmark and knows
\nrelentless rain, seasons of darkness,
\nbars that stay open all night,<\/p>\n

and is surprised he made it past thirty\u2014
\nevery year is a bonus, he says.
\nI love his gratitude as I love the way he falls to sleep,<\/p>\n

immediately, his nose a saxophone of breath tilted toward the stars.
\nSometimes he holds my hand while he sleeps, a sweetness
\nthat feels like grace. Wind pummels the doors<\/p>\n

as I rise onto him and he rises into me,
\nthe pine lurching in a green arc
\nlike a wave about to break.<\/p>\n
