STRAIGHT THROUGH TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA<\/p>\n

Driving east in the bower of an apple-green
\nreturned spring
\nas rain wet everything quickly
\nand the fields, opening,
\nreceived their seed, I thought:
\nhave I brought our daughter this far east
\nto learn there are places
\nto which she can’t belong;
\nthat once a mind isolates, a veil falls.
\n(It could be the rain. Or the night inside the night.)
\nMy thinking kept returning<\/p>\n

to all those who would like to be here.
\nThe ones who once tied their espaliered pears
\nto every farm wall.
\nThose exiles who fled these cobblestone.
\nDo they still call to one another with light in their soul
\nevery afternoon? Far from home,
\nover hills like shafts of bolting arrows,
\nour minds ranging (what is it that
\nchanges inside barbed wire — the rain?),
\nwe drove under the blessings of trees, regardless.<\/p>\n
