GIVING DRINK TO THOSE WHO THIRST<\/p>\n

The table is prepared:<\/p>\n

the burgundy as robust as blood<\/p>\n

coursing through a torso, the crusty bread<\/p>\n

uncut and hot, the honey, the butter.<\/p>\n

In this gust of time, our lives<\/p>\n

seem nearly perfect.<\/p>\n

Against the butter knife, the bread board, our touch<\/p>\n

is brief and premediated. Honey floats on my tongue,<\/p>\n

a last still point of assurance<\/p>\n

before our cascade of grief.<\/p>\n

My body hazy with wine, I lean back<\/p>\n

into my misbelief that life is<\/p>\n

everlasting. We receive the night as a third body<\/p>\n

arrived to eat and drink. We’ve forgotten<\/p>\n

how bodies transfuse themselves<\/p>\n

into night, first an ordinary<\/p>\n

flake of skin, an unmissed eylash,<\/p>\n

then an entire birthmark or scar<\/p>\n

twisted among the roots<\/p>\n

of a field, soaked up into a tassel of wheat,<\/p>\n

kneaded into a loaf<\/p>\n

which multiplies as we leave ourselves<\/p>\n

at this irresistible edge of hunger,<\/p>\n

this brink of thirst.<\/p>\n
