1.<\/p>\n

The crying child gets up from his bed to look
\nfor his father. He has dreamed of another family–
\nstucco farmhouse, dry weeds
\nblowing against a wall. In the dream, he enters the backdoor
\nand his dream father, sitting in the kitchen,
\nlooks up and smiles. But now he’s running through his real house,
\nconfused by two fathers,
\ntwo places to live. In his parents’ room he finds a comforting<\/p>\n

mound of covers.\u00a0<\/i>Dada!<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0he cries, just as a huge bear
\nsits up in the bed. Stunned, the child staggers and falls;
\nthe bear snatches him up and runs from the house to the woods
\nbehind the house, the child
\nhanging from its mouth, arms and legs
\nflopping, wide-eyed and dazed.<\/p>\n

2.<\/p>\n

Upstairs in the house his parents are talking
\nin bed–about what each would do
\nif the other died, recalling their own
\nreal and longed-for parents. When their crying
\nson runs in the father sits up and smiles; the boy,
\ngaping, staggers and falls; his father
\nrushes from the bed and carries him back,
\nholding him to his chest.<\/p>\n

And as if the body could save itself
\nby saying\u00a0real–dreamed<\/em>, by dividing
\nthe sheet of paper into front
\nand back, so the father
\nholds his son to him and says,
\nShh, it was just a dream.<\/em><\/p>\n
