Farrah Field\u2019s gripping debut collection, Rising<\/em>, offers a new\u00a0Southern poetry in which \u201cyour eyes righten to Bayou and moth hum.\/\/ Fish bite at talk of\u00a0Lacan and swim away Jefferson.\u201d Field\u2014who is from Cheyenne, Wyoming, by way of Nebraska,\u00a0Colorado, Louisiana, Arkansas, Sicily, Belgium, and Brooklyn\u2014interrogates the passion of\u00a0itinerancy, the ways \u201cthe old lust bakes\/ and rises, searching for a new home.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Rising<\/em>, Field lets loose a Calamity Jane-like voice loaded with screwball humor: \u201cKnight of\u00a0slight hiccup,\/ Knight of octopus ink-dyed pasta.\u201d \u201cShake the prongs of kudzu or lose the\u00a0accent, girl,\u201d advises one brilliantly epigrammatic poem. In poems with titles like \u201cYou Eat Like\u00a0a Pig and Someone Should Tell You\u201d or \u201cWedding in a Nightgown and Fur Coat,\u201d Field hits her\u00a0subjects head-on, unrepentant even as she is good-humored. Laughter, though, is all too often\u00a0not that far from slaughter, and Rising<\/em> unflinchingly confronts violent loss as well as sensual\u00a0indulgence: \u201cSo much is let out of a face and I read in folk Someone killed your someone too<\/em>.”\u00a0Questions about what happened resolve into statements, into a determination to understand\u00a0murder or divorce and a thirst to know what to do with anger and desire.<\/p>\n

Field re-thinks Southern storytelling,\u00a0turning away from narratives of proud heritage to show that what is alive is closest and\u00a0most important: how sex rises, how love rises, how a rowboat\u2019s \u201cpaddles hit the water: trust<\/em>, lift,\u00a0gleam, trust<\/em>.\u201d Rising<\/em>\u2019s roving not-quite-South is here-and-now, and Field\u2019s vibrant collection ends\u00a0in \u201cemphasis and wonder,\u201d \u201cplanning Jefferson myth-debunking,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s October and you are\u00a0happy,\u201d and we know the quality of happiness, traveling through and leaving behind loss.<\/p>\n
