INAUGURATION OF A HOUSE<\/p>\n

Right away the ill omens begin:
\nthe seller\u2019s lawyer has a blood-stained eye.
\nThen a drunk driver knocks the mailbox down,
\nand I kill a snake in the basement,
\nits mottled body writhing on the slab.
\nAll before we\u2019ve even moved in.<\/p>\n

Is this an initiation? We try to dispel any evil
\nby sprinkling kosher salt in all the corners,
\nthen set to work to make the house
\nour own. All the old knob-and-tube wiring
\nis ripped out of the horsehair walls
\nand replaced with virgin Romex.<\/p>\n

I spackle and repaint, bash my knuckles
\nlugging boxes in, struggle with molly
\nand toggle bolts, and pinch my thumb with pliers,
\nraising a blister as dark as a Concord grape.
\nThe plumber gets our one toilet running
\nbut warns, \u201cShe\u2019s going to sweat like a pig.\u201d<\/p>\n

The house doesn\u2019t begin to feel like ours
\nuntil we\u2019re making love in it, on this bed
\nwe had to dismantle to get upstairs,
\nand under this roof that needs repairs.
\nWe\u2019re trying not to think about that now,
\nmaking sure instead that this is good<\/p>\n

for both of us, making it last,
\ntasting the wet salt on each other\u2019s skin,
\nhere among these boxes stacked
\nlike sandbags against disaster or attack,
\nuntil these walls I\u2019ve patched
\nabsorb our cries and take us in.<\/p>\n
