TOMATOES<\/p>\n

My father had ideas
\nthat made his face shine.
\nHe sat at the kitchen table–
\nno one will remember this–
\nin Colorado, in ’49, he said
\n“Tomatoes” the word rolling
\noff his tongue so sweetly
\nI said “What.” “Don’t interrupt”
\nMother said “and with your mouth
\nfull.” But it was too late;
\nhe was into it. His ears
\ngrew red, then white,
\nbulbs it up behind his eyes.
\nTomatoes! Yet I do
\nnothing. My mouth is full
\nof food, the good food he
\nputs on our table. I’m
\nnine. I don’t know yet
\nhow the black blood presses
\nagainst his brain like a fist:
\nhe sighs, falls to the ground,
\nfroths at the mouth. I
\ndon’t see him in the morning
\nwalk to the closet, open the
\ndoor, asking his clothes why,
\nhis shoes why, bruised and sweating.
\nOutside, the blizzard of ’49.
\nTomatoes.<\/em>\u00a0I wanted to kiss him.
\nInstead I lift my glass of milk.<\/p>\n
