My saint, apathetic, sits on a rock near me,<\/p>\n

his gown falls between worn knees. He yawns,<\/p>\n

he’s seen worse: men drawn and quartered, women<\/p>\n

burned at the stake. And then I leave him, even.<\/p>\n

Infidelity, a gift I learn well.<\/p>\n

I cheat on myself with myself,<\/p>\n

confess my mixed emotions for the human body,<\/p>\n

for the way I stand by and watch things happen.<\/p>\n

For invasions, large and small: thin needles, chest tubes.<\/p>\n

I watch primitive rituals and call them science.<\/p>\n

I search the faces of the dead for answers\u2014<\/p>\n

Where have they gone to? Why are they cold?<\/p>\n

My saint, meanwhile, signals me.<\/p>\n

It’s easy at the bedside of the suffering.<\/p>\n

I’m good at what I do. But my sin is this:<\/p>\n

I use the dying to understand where my brother has gone.<\/p>\n

Each time I touch them I am studying their bodies<\/p>\n

for clues. And the little prayers I say are always for myself.<\/p>\n
