Take me to a warm room and keep me\nlying flat. Place a small pillow\nbeneath my injured head. My eyes\n\nmay eventually go blank, always when\nmost excited. They may begin losing\nperspective: The sun is in my throat.\n\nPlease loosen the clothing around my neck. \nI am beginning to see a dome of light. \nIt is a shrinking habitat. I might say: \n\nMy tongue weighs tons and is made of sulfur. \nI might say: My tongue is mostly phosphorous, \nmy lashes carry salt. Where was I going? \n\nI was heading in a direction. You know \nhow it must feel to make an admission. \nIt is easy to forgive. It is asked for. It is given. \n\nBring me back indoors, undress me, place me \nin a bed and sponge my body freely \nwith seawater until my temperature drops. \n\nI can get upset by the easiest of things: \nblood near my eyes. The bleeding point \nmost likely in the lungs, stomach, or skull. \n\nUntil I become fully conscious prop me \non my side to keep airways open. \nI am frightened. It is difficult to grieve. \n\nI am thinking it is cold, it is only morning. \nI am uneasy on land and water. \nMy head hurts and I am trying to explain \n\nthat each person has a partner on the opposite coast. \nWhen the two partners find each other \nthey sit down together and wait by the sea. \n\nEverything is calm, peaceful, and cold. \nPeople are arriving to build a home \nnear the sea.
