The poems in\u00a0Furs Not Mine<\/em>\u00a0display Andrea Cohen\u2019s masterful craft and lyricism and her keen wit. In Cohen\u2019s elegiac shoals, we see how \u201cGreat griefs are antidotes \/\u00a0for lesser sorrows,\u201d and in her strange, surprising narratives, we glimpse a man darting into traffic for a hubcap, \u201cmeaning to build his dream \/ vehicle from scrap.\u201d These poems, too, have the feel of dreamy constructions, in which\u00a0bliss \u201cfrom a distance, can look like pain.\u201d That\u2019s the magic of this collection: it holds loss and promise in the same image\u2013\u2013sometimes even the same word.<\/p>\n

The notion of the home\ninvasion is mostly myth.\n\nMostly we leave\nourselves unlocked, say\n\nto a stranger: honey,\ncome on in. \n\nMostly the home \ninvasion is an inside \n\njob: your interiors \nget ravaged and pointing \n\na finger, you \nmean to seek \n\ndamages. I left \nthe window open, \n\ntold the guard \ndogs to roll over. \n\nHe pinched my last \ncandlesticks. If he'd \n\nasked, I'd have filled \nthem with fire, I'd \n\nhave packed his candle- \nlit supper to go, for the long, \n\nsorry night he was entering.<\/pre>\n
