This focus encompasses Micronesia\u2019s morality, its taboos and myths, and how information and stories disseminate between villages, social groups, ethnicities, classes, and genders. Using persona, these poems explore and challenge the idea of witness.<\/p>\n

In the heated banter near Sapuk School\nmy brothers huddled\n\nin half-moons around it\nwatching the flat section of the road\n\nthe flex of hip thrusted\nthe mocked act\n\ncrowded mutt males working inverses\nin the body's softest underskin\n\na rattle echoing the wire-grate window \nthe jolt of knee-bends rubbing \n\na burn running through thigh sinew \ndogs marking a beat down \n\nten-litter teats dragging a fog-dust \na rooted chorus \n\na quarter-terrier's thudded weight \nthe speckle-gray half-hound \n\nmoping the foreground \nthe weaker breeds bleeding from the ears \n\nsubmissive in the dense heat \nthe dogs going for it \n\nunder the mango tree \nthe thought my brothers must drum \n\nin the sporadic head-turns \nthe tightening calves \n\nhow pain must enter somewhere \nshift indifferently \n\neven the flies flocking to the bloodspot \nthe blurred swarm settling.<\/pre>\n
