The poems in Pax Americana<\/em> are born out of the violent, fractious, and disillusioning opening to the 21st<\/sup> century. The decade of protracted wars and economic collapse\u2014coupled with the polarizing of wealth and ideologies in this country\u2014create the catalysts for this book. These are social poems that want to talk, and through talking hopefully make a space where people can meet and find meaning in each other.<\/p>\n

“Auspices,” from Pax Americana<\/em>:<\/p>\n

I want to think of them as having been \nsent up ahead, the swift ones bearing news\nof tides to follow, so we might get ready,\nthe dark swells and dips of starlings--or grackles--\n\nbeing that impressive to watch in winter\ngather nightly above the downtown square,\nthese grackles--or starlings--mostly unnoticed\nuntil their purpose tips to overwhelming,\n\nwhere surely some word has been given us. \nMostly I find them unpleasant, a grimy \ncongress of incomprehensible bathing \nin oil-stained puddles slowly cooking off \n\nparking lots, or at trash cans, their sharp heads \nstabbing after this soggy morsel of bun, \nnow this corruption of meat. Mostly they are \na nuisance. A tree unwise to walk nearby; \n\na beam risky to leave your car beneath. \nAnd on the Internet--where my haphazard \ncompulsive search for understanding leads me-- \nsomeone's posted a poorly captured and cut \n\nvideo of \"a starling (or grackle, \nsorry),\" he or she writes, who's just started \ndigging into another bird on the lawn, \nwhile a bored looking rabbit and we look on \n\nthis meal. The eating continued for hours, \nwe're told, and the music the maker's spliced in \nportends that this \"appetite is tremendous,\" \nwarns, \"keep your eye on the barrel, a sparrow.\"<\/pre>\n
