Prayer
Have your ever heard
what those people are doing
in your name while you stand there
silent and close-lipped
without helping anyone
What kind of wave flows from inside you
In India devotees raze mosques
The sacred earth floods with innocent blood
yesterday’s memory is not far off
What can mere rock do after hearing
if it has no feet, no heart
All worship, all tantra-mantras
are whispers in the desert
O Ram, saffron color has turned black
What is more useless than prayer
If You Say Ram Ram
Then say it quietly
so these nationalists don’t open their ears
and listen
Make it come out softly
as they will believe
and manipulate your Ram into their Ram
as though the same
And you won’t be able to convince anyone
that your Ram never lived in Ayodhya,
your Ram is mere breath
Just taking the name they won’t understand
your Ram doesn’t drink blood

Hari, I yellow
without you so
water’s blue disappears.
All my roots dried,
where will flowers bloom?
Hari, I yellow
my Piya went abroad
Spring comes, the gardens empty.
All my roots dried,
where will flowers bloom?
Hari, the foreign world beckons
I want to follow my Piya
crossing the kalapani.
All my roots dried,
where will flowers bloom?
Vulture
Above wings, sun
eyes on the earth.
Where the sun meets the horizon
just one name spreads.
Draw in a flying breath
air and sky all around
there is one name
I have lost.
On the shore of life’s lake
nameless and infamous
what is the difference?
Eagle, come close and tell me.
The prey’s meat inside you
rots, in your throat, disease.
Such filth inside both of us,
where can divinity rest?
Unfaltering, unflappable, still,
you call out,
from the sky, night and day
despite this body’s dirt, Ram-Ram.

“Our idea in calling this the ‘Translator’s Page’ is to show the ways and/or languages in which a translator works. Monthly posts may include translations from different languages and styles and centuries. The connective thread between them is the ability of the translator to interpret cultures and time periods for the contemporary reader.”
