The Geographic Cure

Ellen Dudley

SUMMER POEM

Feed the birds, tie up the peony
and mow the lawn. Now
the earth takes another
pass around the sun. And it is
summer. We’re tilting northward
now, tilting and the dogs roll and
the grass and food grow and
the cats chase the birds on
the other side of the glass. And yes,
today is cool and windy and
the pond is filled with cat’s paws
and trout. Another day. Perfect
day. And gone.

“Ellen Dudley’s The Geographic Cure has a precision of language and an erotic muscularity that make her poems not only unique but a pleasure to read.” — Stephen Dobyns
