These are by any account dramatic times, even a kind of crossroads, and the sense of community in this nation is more threatened than we’ve seen for many years. As it happens, Four Way Books celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2018. And we’re tempted to tease out the metaphor: the darkness emanating from Washington and the shine that Four Way Books has brought year after year for twenty-five years to the literary landscape and to the American landscape could not be more divergent. In fact, the shine appears more bright and certainly more urgent because of the turning away, in our government, from the belief that art is a valuable means of uniting people towards our common humanness.
This is what Four Way Books has done over its history and as it has grown its voice has become more forceful and more heard. There is little doubt now that Four Way Books is one of the most important and influential literary presses of this nation, even winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry with Gregory Pardlo’s Digest.
I am honored to begin my term as President of the Board of Directors at a time when our voice is so crucial, when what we bring to poetry and fiction is so absolutely necessary to right the balance of society. And while I am honored, I recognize that the work is even harder now, and that the forces arrayed against this sense of community require us to push even more, sweat even more. Therefore, I ask you to assist us to the maximum means possible.
Each year we publish 16-18 books of poetry and short fiction, and the critical acclaim for our books keeps rising. Recently, Reginald Dwayne Betts’s Bastards of the Reagan Era was honored with the National Council on Crime and Delinquency’s Media for a Just Society Award. Our books receive stellar reviews, nominations, and awards each year: both within and beyond the literary world!
During our 25th anniversary year, we will celebrate our achievements robustly and joyously, and we hope that you will celebrate with us and send along a fitting present to commemorate this remarkable quarter-century. Your support will speak to the importance of sustaining the arts now and in the future. A gift that is significant to you is significant to us, and truly appreciated.
Thank you very much.
With best wishes,
